Discussion

Fugitivus now has a functioning discussion board!

There is a link called “Discussion” at the top of the page. It leads to a replicate of the post below:

Fugitivus now has an online discussion board. It is moderated by several commenters. Conduct, rules, moderation, and tone are set completely by the moderators — Harriet J provides the message board, but does not participate and rarely reads. This is a place to engage in more in-depth discussions on Fugitivus posts, but it’s also open to general discussion of things-not-Fugitivus.

If you have a technical problem with the board, if you would like to be a moderator, or if you have complaints, tell the moderators. If it involves Harriet, the moderators will contact her. Otherwise,  the only time Harriet J will become involved on the board will be if it has to be nuked from orbit. Suggestions or complaints about the board left in the comments here will be ignored completely.

The board is hosted using phpbb. You will need to register an account. Some forums will not be visible until you have begun posting.

Visit the board at https://fugitivus.net/discussion

The boards look great. I couldn’t see a place on the boards to post this, but your moderator section is visible to anyone. In my experience as a mod on other boards, a lot of the discussion involves users’ problematic behavior, and thus needs to be hidden.

Harriet, you’re probably aware of this, but I thought it was awesome enough to share:
You were mentioned in today’s anti-Google article on Cracked.

You are needy, vulnerable, lonely, stupid, crippled, and alien. The thing is, we are interested in that, as well as in the fact that you are about five times more intelligent than most of us. Which I think would make anyone feel even lonelier, as I suppose it should.

    I just … argh.

I think your aspirations are going to have to be different from having friends and being normal. I think you’re going to have to evaluate cutting and hiding and hating yourself in cost/benefit terms, the same way friendship can be evaluated. I think being happy and being whole are going to be special treats, and that you might just have to just take them when they come, and fuck the people who look at you funny. I think things aren’t going to be consistently significantly better than they are.

But they are so much better than they were.

I think you’re going to have to ride that material and make it yours.

I think how life has shaped you is going to overwhelm people and make them, monkeys that they are, monkeys that we all are, afraid and avoidant. It’s instinctive. They’re weak. We’re weak. We want the comfort of ignorance, the comfort of only being responsible for ourselves and the things that make us happy. “Happy”. We are all the same, and all alien. Some of us just have better defenses against realizing it. Some of us have more mattresses to cling to.

Being friends is an agreement to forget ourselves in each other’s company. We aren’t always successful. It’s an ongoing process. It’s not a state of being, it’s a game, a formality, an agreement, an arrangement. But it’s an important one, something that shapes your life. Time-limited life. It’s something that might be struck up for one self-serving reason or another, but continues because the relationship itself, the arrangement, is mutually valued for itself. You don’t have to earn it … you don’t have to deserve it. You have to *engage* in it. You are yourself, your friend is themself; you do something together and it is itself. It’s a thing you make and enjoy.

I am proud of your Bear. I am so glad he’s there. I bet he’s glad he’s there. We don’t all get to sit so close to someone who’s sitting so close to the bright burning horrible source of human things.

    Write write write write write.

I won’t feel bad if you don’t approve the comment. I’m just emoting, and it might be missing the point or presuming too much. Just, thank you for writing. It is important , and you’re really stepping up to the mark.
